An article published by World Economic Forum states that “By 2050,
a global population of 9.7 billion will demand 70% more food than is consumed today, according
to some experts”. More surprisingly, perhaps, is the author’s statement in which he suggests
something that might help re-establish some order to the food chain: “Getting our protein from
insects could help ease the burden that our diets place on the climate.”
As the article argues, in some eastern cultures it is already a common practice to get
nutrients from a variety of insects. However, the western hemisphere might have some trouble
adjusting to this new wave of consumption. I created BUGZ FOOD LABS, INC. as a parody of the
continued normalization of mass production in our society. Inspired by the non-threatening
aesthetics of the 1950s, the BUGZ branding both interrupts and compliments the political climate
of this period juxtaposed with the realization of another man-made global crisis in the near future.
